You vs. You: Evict Your Inner Monster & Level Up Your Happiness

Yellow cartoon monster holding a pint of ice cream with drool dripping down his face and onto the ground

Feeling like you're constantly locked in a cage match with yourself? One minute you're slaying dragons, or maybe just deadlines, the next you're questioning your life choices while hiding under a pile of warm blankets with a shameful amount of cookie dough.

Here's the deal: we all have those inner monsters. You know, the voice that whispers sweet nothings in your ear, like, "You'll never be good enough," "Everyone secretly judges you," and "Just one more slice of pizza won't unleash the carb-ocalypse, right?" That voice is essentially a tiny Gremlin trapped in your head, constantly trying to devour your happiness.

Fear not! You’re not alone, and we're about to turn this self-loathing pit of despair into a self-love rager.

Here's how to evict the inner monster and level up your happiness without having to invest your hard-earned dollars on a professional monster tamer:

1. Unmask the Beast: This shadowy beastie is not your bestie and prefers to operate in darkness. The first step is to drag that creep into the light. How do you do that? Start by paying attention to the negative thoughts slithering through your mind throughout the day. Write them down, draw them a scary picture – whatever helps you understand their monstrous motivations.

2. Fact-Check the Lies: Once you've heard your inner monster take the stand and testify against you, it's time to fact-check him like a truth-seeking lunatic lawyer. Is it actually true that everyone secretly judges you? Probably not. Did you actually need that third slice of pizza? It’s possible, but probably not.

3. Talk Shit to the Monster: Bullying is so 2000-and-late. Don't let your inner monster bully you around! Develop your inner badass warrior and challenge those negative thoughts. When the monster hints that, "You'll never succeed," you counter with, "Hold my metaphorical battle axe and watch me!"

4. Slay the Boredom Dragon: Remember that time you spent binge watching your favorite show and it felt surprisingly good? Yeah, do more of that. Life's too short to be miserable all the time. Seek out activities that spark your joy, whether it's dancing like nobody's watching, learning a new skill, or simply taking a nap. Make time for things that bring you joy and quiet your inner monster.

5. Surround Yourself with Epic Companions: You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. Choose wisely! Ditch the energy vampires who suck the joy from you and, instead, choose to surround yourself with people who make you laugh, support you, and believe in you, even if you don't always believe in yourself.

6. Celebrate Every Victory, Big or Small: We often hyper-focus on what we haven't achieved, neglecting to acknowledge the wins (Ws) we've already racked up. Did you finally slay that project at work? Did you drag yourself out of bed and go for a walk? High five yourself! Pat yourself on the butt! Celebrate even the small victories, because progress is progress, no matter how big or small.

7. Forgive Yourself: We all make mistakes. Every one of us. You can scream into a pillow for a little while, even if it’s slightly alarming to your neighbors. Holding onto grudges against yourself is like handing your inner monster a boxing glove and begging him to punch you. Just don't do it!

Remember, happiness is a journey, not a destination. There will be ups and downs, and that's okay. But by implementing these tips and evicting the inner monster, you can take the reins and steer yourself toward a happier, more fulfilling life. Now go forth and conquer the day. Or, at least conquer that mountain of laundry. Baby steps!
